KING SALMON FISHING

ABOUT King Salmon FIshing

King salmon are the largest species in the salmon family, some reaching upwards of 100 pounds! Known for their large size, strength, and delicious flavor, king salmon are considered to be one of the most prized fish species in the world. Kings are prized for their rich, oily flesh that is often considered the best-tasting of all salmon species. King salmon are also unique due to their extensive migration patterns, which can take them hundreds of miles from their birthplace in the ocean to their spawning grounds in freshwater rivers and streams. In Alaska, king salmon are typically found in the cold, clear waters of the state's abundant rivers and bays.

All About King Salmon Fishing in Alaska at McDougall Lodge

Please note: Due to the reduced population of King Salmon in Alaska, we are not allowed to target King Salmon for the 2026 season. If we accidentally hook one, we are required by law to throw it back.

Looking forward to the rebound of the King population, read all about them below.

There’s nothing quite like the moment a King Salmon grabs your line.

Also known as Chinook salmon, king salmon are the largest and strongest of all Pacific salmon. They are powerful, aggressive, and built to test your skill from the very first run. At McDougall Lodge on Lake Creek, you’ll experience the thrill of targeting these legendary fish in one of the most scenic and remote fisheries in Alaska.

Just 65 miles northwest of Anchorage and accessed by floatplane, your adventure begins the moment you lift off. When you land at Lake Creek, you’re stepping into true Alaskan wilderness where every salmon swimming upriver passes right through our waters.

How Big Are King Salmon?

King salmon are called “kings” for a reason.

The average king salmon weighs between 20 and 40 pounds. Larger fish commonly range from 40 to 60 pounds, and true trophy-class kings can exceed 70 pounds. It’s not unusual to hook into a fish longer than your leg and heavier than your carry-on bag.

Their size alone is impressive, but it’s their strength that makes them unforgettable. When a king salmon runs, it doesn’t gently tug. It takes off with long, powerful runs, deep dives, and head shakes that test your drag and your patience. This is the fish anglers dream about.

King Salmon at Lake Creek

Lake Creek flows into the glacial Yentna River, placing our lodge in a prime location along this major salmon migration route. Every fish heading upstream passes through this system, giving our guests unmatched access right from our doorstep.

We operate the largest fleet of boats on the river, including spacious jet sleds that allow us to fish the lower eight miles of Lake Creek and several productive tributaries. With more water to explore, we can spread out and focus on the most productive stretches of river each day.

No matter if you are an experienced angler or chasing your first king salmon, our guides will help you read the water, dial in your presentation, and fight these powerful fish with confidence.

2026 King Salmon Regulations – Catch and Release Only

For the 2026 season, king salmon fishing is strictly catch and release.

We fully support responsible fishery management and conservation efforts that protect Alaska’s king salmon populations for the future. These regulations are designed to ensure sustainability so generations to come can experience the same thrill of battling a king in wild Alaskan waters.

Catch and release does not lessen the excitement. You still feel the strike. You still battle the fish. You still hold a massive king in your hands. Then you watch it power back into the current, strong and wild, exactly where it belongs.

While king salmon are catch and release for 2026, Lake Creek continues to offer outstanding opportunities for sockeye, coho, pink, and chum salmon, along with rainbow trout, Arctic grayling, and northern pike throughout the season.

Comfort in the Alaskan Wilderness

After a full day on the water, you’ll return to hotel-quality accommodations designed for comfort without losing that authentic Alaskan feel. Hot showers and flush toilets, which are rare in remote fly-in locations like ours, make all the difference after a long day fishing.

Our on-site chef prepares hearty, memorable meals that guests frequently rave about. It’s common for visitors to ask for recipes before they head home. Good food tastes even better after a day spent chasing king salmon.

Your floatplane flight to the lodge is coordinated for you and included in your package, along with all meals and guided fishing. We offer day trips as well as three-night and four-night packages to fit your schedule.
